Entry requirements
Participants should have no prior knowledge of German.
Remarks
We offer 5 courses at A level that you should complete before attending the B level courses. For a description of the levels, see
Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
.
The first two courses (German 1: A1.1 and German 2: A1.2) will take you to A1 level, the following two courses (German 3: A2.1 and German 4: A2.2) to A2 level, and the fifth course (German 5: A2.2/B1.1) is a transition to the B1 level courses.
Aims
The aim of the course is to enable participants to communicate in German at a basic level. Participants build up the vocabulary they need to deal with everyday situations. They are able to speak in short, simple sentences about a familiar topic; ask simple questions; and understand speakers when they speak slowly. They understand simple texts and can find the main information in a text. They can write short texts about a prepared topic. They have basic knowledge of the structure of the German language.
Content and approach
The course covers listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Learning strategies are introduced in order to promote and support independent learning. Some of the following topics are covered: Introducing oneself, family, work and study, leisure, restaurants, food and prices, time expressions, and numbers. Grammar topics are: Question words, sentence structures, the conjugation of regular and irregular verbs in the present tense, articles, nouns, personal and possessive pronouns, use of nominative and accusative cases, and numbers.
Assessment, ECTS credits, and workload
2 ECTS credits are awarded for successful completion of the course, which includes progress checks and/or exams. Active and committed participation is required, and participants should be able to dedicate at least 3 hours a week to extending their range of vocabulary, to homework, and to further independent study activities.
Materials
The course material is provided in digital form. Please ensure that you have the course material ready in a suitable form for your notes during the courses (e.g. using a tablet or as a printout).
