Remarks
We offer 5 courses at A level that you should complete before attending the B level courses. For a description of the levels, see
Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
.
The first two courses (German 1: A1.1 and German 2: A1.2) will take you to A1 level, the following two courses (German 3: A2.1 and German 4: A2.2) to A2 level, and the fifth course (German 5: A2.2/B1.1) is a transition to the B1 level courses.
Aims
The aim of the course is to improve participants’ basic German. Participants expand and consolidate their vocabulary in order to understand and deal with a wider range of situations. They can keep a conversation going when the topic is familiar to them and can ask about other people’s biographies and give information about their own. Using a series of simple sentences and linguistic devices, they are able to exchange information about their immediate needs in daily situations. Participants understand simple texts when these relate to their living and work conditions. They can write a simple text on familiar topics.
Content and approach
The course covers the types of listening, speaking, reading, and writing needed in everyday life in Zurich. The focus is on communicative skills, vocabulary, and grammar. Learning strategies are introduced to promote and support independent learning. Some of the following topics are covered: Daily routines, everyday situations and past experiences. Grammar topics are: Separable verbs, sentence structure of main clauses and subordinate clauses, declension of pronouns and articles in the nominative and accusative cases, imperatives, modal verbs, introduction to present perfect tense.
Assessment, ECTS credits, and workload
2 ECTS credits are awarded for successful completion of the course, which includes progress checks and/or exams. Active and committed participation is required, and participants should be able to dedicate at least 3 hours a week to extending their range of vocabulary, to homework, and to further independent study activities.
Materials
The course material is provided in digital form. Please ensure that you have the course material ready in a suitable form for your notes during the courses (e.g. using a tablet or as a printout).
