Aims

Participants feel confident when speaking German in everyday situations; they are able to produce a broader range of vocabulary and useful phrases. Participants improve their ability to speak, understand, and write in the present and the past tenses. They can describe various everyday situations and they understand short, simple texts and spoken information. Participants can express their opinions und and can react to others’ opinions.

Content and approach

The course covers listening, speaking, reading, and writing tasks, with a focus on participants’ productive abilities (role plays, dialogs, and simple discussions), listening skills, and pronunciation. Vocabulary is expanded through exercises and autonomous work. The course covers everyday situations, talking about one’s private and professional life in Switzerland; describing concrete situations in the past, relationships and leisure, and express one's opinion. Grammar includes the consolidation of previously learnt structures, including present tense, perfect tense, and sentence structures in main clauses and subordinate clauses. In addition, the course includes prepositions, adjectives and the use of cases.

Assessment, ECTS credits, and workload

2 ECTS credits are awarded for successful completion of the course, which includes progress checks and/or exams. Active and committed participation is required, and participants should be able to dedicate at least 3 hours a week to extending their range of vocabulary, to homework, and to further independent study activities.
